If death occurs at home

If a death occurs at home (expected death), for example if your loved one had a terminal illness, you should call their GP surgery as soon as possible so that you can receive a medical certificate from the on-call doctor. After surgery hours, you should ring 111. You can arrange for a funeral service once the doctor has seen your loved one's body. In case your loved one didn't have a GP or you're unsure, arrange an ambulance via 111 to assist you.

If death occurs at a hospital or care home

If your loved one dies at a hospital or in a nursing home, the hospital staff or care home staff should advise you on the next step. There should be a specialist bereavement or patient affairs unit in all hospitals and that helps those whose loved one died in that hospital.

The specialist staff at the hospital should:

  • Handle the initial stages of the paperwork, including getting a cause of death certificate

  • Advise you on registering a death and finding a funeral director

  • Hand over your loved one's belongings to you

  • Provide you with information about local support services

Unexpected or sudden death

When a death occurs unexpectedly, emergency services have to be called on 999. You have to explain the circumstances to the operator, upon which they will give you instructions on the next step. If required, they may arrange an ambulance and/or police. In case the cause of death is unclear, paramedics will make a call to the coroner's officer. It will make necessary arrangements to take the deceased to the mortuary.

The police might want to visit the place where the death took place for examination. Their visit depends on the cause of death and they must visit if the death was caused by an accident or a criminal act. If this is the case:

  • Make sure you don't disturb the surrounding area, but you can do all essentials to help the person.

  • If you are sure that the person is deceased, don't touch anything.
